Next week's Live Spotlight: DEOLINDA + GAITEIROS DE LISBOA - November 6th - Cinema São Jorge

Misty Fest is a urban music festival that started in Sintra in 2010, moved to Lisbon in 2012 and this year branches out to different cities throughout Portugal. One of the most curious events of this year's edition is an encounter of two bands who dedicate their career to updating Portuguese traditional music: DEOLINDA and GAITEIROS DE LISBOA.
The first project takes the tradition of the fado vadio (instilled by the powerful voice of Ana Bacalhau) crossing it with jazz groove and pop sensibility. The second takes pure folk themes and lyrics, using bagpipes and other wind instruments of all shapes and sizes plus layers of percussion to create something which SOUNDS like folk but is firmly innovative. Both bands are going to cross repertoires, playing songs and working as extended formations of one another, so it's bound to be interesting!

GLAM-O-RAMA

Is heavy metal your religion? There's a place where you can get your gospel on: GLAM-O-RAMA. Beginning its activities on the outskirts of Lisbon, and after a year-and-a-half stay on a shopping mall, Glam-O-Rama has a new shop, close to the city centre yet far enough from the commotion.

Here you will find a good selection of heavy sounds, from the various strains of metal to punk/hardcore and industrial, but also prog, indie or even jazz and fado, in CD, vinyl or DVD, new and used. Rare items are an common treat, from the foreign pressing to the limited edition box. Assorted clothing and memorabilia are also available.
The owner, Luís Lamelas, is also the mainman of Chaosphere Recordings, responsible for some great portuguese metal and punk releases (also available at the shop).

So, if you're looking for fuel for your headbanging, look no further: come to GLAM-O-RAMA!

Next week's Live Spotlight: NORBERTO LOBO / HIP HOP ALL STARS - October 31st / November 1st

Last week there was no Live Spotlight, so this week we'll make it double! This Halloween, there are two events next week regarding Portuguese music which require our full attention: first, the incredible guitar playing of Norberto Lobo, and second, the Hip Hop All Stars night, with the cream of the new portuguese hip hop generation.
On the 31st of October, we have Norberto Lobo, a guitar player which style evokes simultaneously the tradition of Carlos Paredes, the fingerpicking of John Fahey and the experimentalism of Six Organs of Admittance's Ben Chasny. Mainly an acoustic player but occasionally dealing with electric noise as well, Lobo always transmits his immense sensibility through his instrument, lulling you, making you awe or simply making you tap your feet.
On the 1st of November, we have the first edition of Hip Hop All Stars, a hip hop fest with a great selection of the latest portuguese rappers, like Regula, Sir Scratch, Jimmy P. and many others. If you're into hip hop, this is a great opportunity to feel the pulse of the local scene.

Established on a 2nd floor of an inconspicuous building in the Campo de Ourique neighbourhood, Pretérito Perfeito hides a trove of rare goods, stocking an incredible selection of the above-mentioned genres and also others like jazz, rock and blues, including a lot of hard-to-find items like reissues of long-forgotten classics. Next week's Live Spotlight: THE QUARTET OF WOAH! + THROES & THE SHINE + FILHO DA MÃE + DJ RIDE - October 16th - MusicBox

MusicBox, a venue on Cais do Sodré dedicated to the more alternative strains of dance and rock music, will be once again the home of Jameson URBAN ROUTES, an indoor festival that celebrates the current tendencies of modern music. On its first night, you can count with two previous LRS Spotlights and two great newcomers.
Both The Quartet of Woah! and Filho da Mãe have been featured on Live Spotlight, and for a good reason: the first are an explosive 70's hard rock-inspired group and the second is a marvellous guitar performer which can transmit more intensity with an acoustic guitar than a full metal band. Add Throes & The Shine, a double-duo that joins post-punk electricity to the addictive groove of the Angolan kuduro, and DJ Ride, our own turntablism master, and you have the recipe for an eclectic night, with some of Portugal's best new sounds. And it's FREE!

TNT - TÓ N' TICHA

Hard rock is a genre which has been losing its popularity over the years to trendier genres, like alternative indie rock, electronica or hip-hop and soul. Well, not entirely... In Campolide, one small shop still holds out against the trends, specialising in hard rock, heavy metal and any genre where guitars rule. Welcome to TNT!

Tó and Ticha (hence the name) are the curators of this little rock and roll haven, where you can find vinyl and CDs (both used and new) as well as DVDs and a lot of assorted memorabilia. Rarities decorate the shop and spice up the shelves as well.
If you can't imagine your life without mindblowing solos, pay a visit to TÓ N' TICHA: a place where guitars still reign supreme!

Linda Martini [alternative rock]
Our Live Spotlight of the week!

Next week's Live Spotlight: LINDA MARTINI - October 12th - Sala Tejo (MEO Arena)

As in many other countries, the noisy punk seed planted by Nirvana in the minds of impressionable youths and subsequent discovery of a whole new world of jagged heavy music, gave way to the creation of unaccountable alt.rock and punk bands in Portugal. Many of those bands didn't last more than a few months, some held on long enough to play some live gigs, but amongst the debris, there were people with genuine will to make great music and devote their life to it. Linda Martini are a group of these people.
Formed in 2003 from the remains of other punk/hardcore bands from the outskirts of Lisbon, Linda Martini have gained momentum during the last ten years, and they are now one of the most loved alternative bands in the country. Having just released their 3rd album, Turbo Lento (their first for a major), the band is going to present it next Saturday at Sala Tejo, the adjacent venue to the bigger MEO Arena (previously Pavilhão Atlântico) on the beautiful Parque das Nações. Expect nothing less than a celebration of sonic teen spirit.
